Before a move
Make a moving inventory you can actually use
One clear room-by-room list helps separate donations from the belongings coming with you.
3 min read · TurboDonate guideA useful inventory is not a perfect catalog of everything you own. It is a working list that helps you, your household, and your providers understand what is moving, what is being donated, and what needs a different route.
Start with a simple note or spreadsheet. Use the same item names on your list, box labels, and service requests so “the upstairs cabinet” does not become three different things in three conversations.
Record the details that change the plan
For furniture, list the item, quantity, current room, destination, and approximate dimensions. Add practical access notes such as floor, stairs, elevator arrangements, and a narrow doorway. Do not guess a weight or truck requirement if you do not know it.
For boxes, a count by room and a short contents label are usually more useful than an exhaustive list of ordinary objects. Keep any private valuables or document inventory separate from a list you share widely.
Give every item a clear status
Use plain statuses: moving, donation being checked, donation arranged, and other disposal route needed. A potential donation should stay on your unresolved list until you have confirmed its destination.
Mark changes with a date and keep one main version. If a family member decides to keep an item or a recipient declines it, update the list before making another request.
Separate loads in the home, too
Labels should match the physical layout. Keep donation boxes apart from packed moving boxes, without blocking a hall or exit. Tell anyone helping that labels identify destinations, not permission to remove items without the agreed plan.
Flag fragile or specialist items for discussion. A piano, oversized safe, or delicate piece needs an appropriate handling plan rather than an assumption that it fits an ordinary furniture move.
Use the list for a final review
Share the relevant inventory with each provider and ask it to confirm the scope. Your list supports a quote review; it does not independently confirm a price, truck size, or appointment. After each collection, mark what actually left and walk the rooms once more.
Your next step, made simple
Keep these five fields
- Item name and quantity.
- Current room and access notes.
- Dimensions for larger furniture.
- Destination or unresolved status.
- Date of the last change.
