Before a move

Decide what to do with furniture that might not fit

Check the piece, the route, and the next room before committing to move or donate it.

A sofa can fit a room on paper and still create problems at the entrance. Before moving large furniture, check both its destination and the route it needs to travel. This is a planning exercise, not an invitation to attempt a difficult lift yourself.

If a piece no longer suits the next home, donation may be one option if it meets a recipient's current requirements. Decide early enough to check acceptance and collection arrangements without a moving-day scramble.

Measure the furniture itself

Record height, width, and depth, including fixed arms, feet, and decorative parts. Note whether the manufacturer designed any parts to be removed, but do not improvise disassembly or remove structural components.

Check the condition at the same time. Open drawers, look for loose sections, and note visible damage. Describe the piece honestly whether you are asking a mover to handle it or checking donation suitability.

Check the route, not just the doorway

Write down relevant doors, turns, stairs, landings, and elevator restrictions at both addresses. Ask building management about reservations and access rules. A single doorway measurement cannot establish that an entire route is workable.

Share your observations with a qualified moving provider and ask it to assess anything tight or unusual. Do not test a risky maneuver, block a shared stairwell, or attempt balcony or window access as a workaround.

Choose a destination deliberately

If the piece fits and serves a purpose, keep it on the moving inventory. If it is useful but surplus, check donation guidelines before arranging transport. If it is damaged or unsuitable for reuse, ask about an appropriate recycling or removal option.

A charity's need and acceptance rules can change. Give accurate measurements and condition details and confirm the intended route; do not arrange a delivery on the assumption that a recipient will take any furniture.

Prepare information, not a risky lift

Empty ordinary contents if your provider asks and it is safe to do so. Keep any approved removable parts and hardware together. Leave the actual handling and any specialist disassembly to people equipped for the task.

Update the inventory after you decide. Your mover and donation provider should each have a clear list of the pieces they are being asked to handle.

Your next step, made simple

Before requesting furniture help

  • Record the piece's full dimensions.
  • Note condition and fixed components.
  • Check stairs, turns, elevators, and building rules.
  • Confirm the intended destination.
  • Ask the provider to review any handling concerns.
