Before a move
Donate before you move, not after you pack
Decide what deserves a place in your next home, then give useful extras a clear route out.
4 min read · TurboDonate guideA move is a good moment to ask a different question: not “Can this fit in a box?” but “Will I use this in the next place?” Donating suitable belongings before packing can leave you with a clearer inventory and fewer items to handle.
The trick is to separate the donation plan from the moving plan. A donation request is not a confirmed collection, and a collection is not a promise that every item will be accepted. Give both plans their own dates and a little breathing room.
Start with the next home
Use a floor plan or room list to identify furniture that fits your next space and daily routine. Measure large pieces instead of guessing. Mark duplicates, spare furnishings, and items you have replaced as candidates for donation, not automatic discards.
Keep essential items until you can comfortably do without them. Your only bed, working desk, or child's favorite chair may need a later decision than the unused side table.
Check condition before boxing
Inspect each candidate in good light. Note broken parts, odors, stains, missing hardware, or other concerns honestly. Check the intended recipient's current guidelines before spending time packing something it cannot use.
Keep sets together and label their contents. A lamp without its shade, a table without its hardware, or loose kitchen pieces can create extra sorting at the other end. Do not conceal damage under wrapping.
Give donation and moving separate windows
Aim to resolve donations before the main packing rush. Ask about collection availability, access requirements, and what happens if an item is declined. Leave a fallback day rather than relying on a donation visit immediately before your moving truck arrives.
Let your mover know when the inventory changes. Removing a sofa from the plan does not automatically change a quote; ask the mover to review the revised list and any access details.
Have a practical fallback
If donation is not suitable, consider a responsible recycling or removal route appropriate to the item. Keep those belongings separate from accepted donations. For moving help, use a moving-service inquiry; for items that need disposal, ask a removal provider about its accepted materials and scope.
Your next step, made simple
Your pre-move donation list
- Measure the furniture you plan to keep.
- Inspect and list donation candidates.
- Confirm the recipient's current guidelines.
- Allow time for collection and a fallback.
- Send the final keep-list to your mover.
