Before a move
Pack the things you kept, with less second-guessing
Turn a finished sort into a simple packing plan without mixing donations back into the move.
3 min read · TurboDonate guidePacking gets confusing when keep, donate, and undecided items share the same floor. Finish a small area of sorting first, then pack that area's keep pile. You do not need to finish the whole home before making progress.
Choose a repeatable system you will still understand when you are tired: destination room, brief contents, and any handling note. Elaborate color codes are optional; clear words are not.
Set up a packing-only space
Use a clear table or safe area for empty boxes, tape, and labels. Keep potential donations elsewhere and label them unmistakably. Do not let a packed box become a convenient place for whatever is nearest.
Use clean, sturdy containers appropriate to their contents. Reuse suitable boxes and protective material when practical, but retire anything weak, damp, or unable to close securely. Keep the walkway and exits clear.
Pack for the destination
Group belongings by the room where you will unpack them. A box labeled “kitchen: everyday dishes” is easier to place than “miscellaneous.” Label more than one side so the description remains visible when boxes are stacked.
Keep containers at a manageable weight and ask your moving provider about its packing requirements. Do not pack hazardous materials, leaking liquids, or specialist equipment as ordinary household goods; identify them and ask for the appropriate route.
Keep a first-night kit separate
Set aside the essentials you need before the main unpacking: basic toiletries, medications, chargers, a change of clothes, and the items that keep children or pets comfortable. Keep important documents with you rather than buried in a general box.
Make the kit visibly different from donations and moving cartons. Let the people helping you know it is staying with you.
Ask for help before the final night
If packing is taking longer than the time you have, ask a packing-service provider what it can handle, what supplies are included, and what you must prepare yourself. Share the remaining room and item list rather than simply saying “a few things.”
Recheck your donation arrangements before finishing. Unresolved donations need a decision, not an unmarked place on the moving truck. Keeping the two plans separate protects the work you already did.
Your next step, made simple
Ready to seal the box?
- Everything inside belongs in the move.
- The container is clean and sound.
- The load is manageable and closes safely.
- The destination room and contents are labeled.
- First-night essentials are kept separately.
