Before a move
A four-week plan for donations before moving day
A calm, adaptable timeline for sorting, checking acceptance, arranging collection, and packing what stays.
4 min read · TurboDonate guideYou do not have to clear the whole house in a weekend. Working backward from moving day gives donation decisions a place on the calendar instead of leaving them in a pile by the door.
Use this as a planning template, not a promise about pickup availability. If your move is sooner, combine the sorting stages but keep time for recipient checks and a backup option.
Four weeks out: make decisions
Walk through one room at a time with four labels: keep, offer for donation, recycle or remove, and decide. Start with spaces you use least. Write down larger items and measure anything whose place in the next home is uncertain.
Give the decide pile a deadline. Ask anyone who shares ownership before offering a belonging away. Keep sentimental decisions separate from easy duplicates so one difficult box does not stall the whole project.
Three weeks out: check the route
Review donation guidelines and confirm whether the intended recipient offers the collection or drop-off arrangement you need. Describe condition and quantities accurately. Ask about stairs, building access, appointment windows, and any preparation requirements.
If you request paid pickup help, distinguish the transport quote from the recipient's acceptance decision. Do not assume a booking means every item has been approved for donation.
Two weeks out: prepare and separate
Clean suitable items, gather their parts, and put small accepted goods in sturdy, clearly labeled boxes. Keep donations in a distinct area that does not obstruct exits or everyday movement.
Pack the belongings you are keeping by destination room. Create one small moving-day essentials bag. If the donation list changes, tell the provider before arrival instead of quietly adding furniture or bags to the collection.
Final week: close the loops
Confirm arrangements, building rules, and who will be present. Resolve declined items through an appropriate alternative rather than leaving them for a charity without permission. Recheck closets, storage areas, and cabinets after collection.
Update your moving inventory and confirm the final plan with your mover. The goal is a home where every remaining item has a destination, not a last-minute race to move unidentified piles.
Your next step, made simple
Five dates to put in your calendar
- Finish the first room-by-room sort.
- Resolve the undecided pile.
- Confirm donation and access arrangements.
- Leave a backup window for declined items.
- Review the final moving inventory.
