Donation basics
What can you donate? Start with condition, then check the recipient
Sort furniture, household goods, and electronics without guessing what a donation center will take.
3 min read · TurboDonate guideThere is no single donation list that works everywhere. The same item may suit one program and be outside another program’s scope, even when it is in good condition.
Use this guide to build a shortlist, not an acceptance guarantee. Before arranging transport, check the receiving location’s current rules for your exact item.
Start with the condition test
Inspect each item in good light. Look for damage, missing parts, strong odors, heavy staining, and signs of pests. Check that furniture is stable and that its normal functions work.
Describe defects honestly. Do not cover damage or bundle an unsuitable item with better items. If you would need to explain a repair before someone could safely use it, ask the recipient first rather than assuming it qualifies.
Furniture is not one category
A wood side table, an upholstered couch, and a mattress have very different acceptance rules. Measure large pieces and identify their material and construction, not just the room they came from.
At the time these guides were checked, the Habitat MetroWest/Greater Worcester ReStore excluded upholstered or leather furniture, particleboard furniture, and mattresses. New Life Furniture Bank excluded mattresses, bed frames, and box springs. Recheck the official lists before choosing either route.
Savers’ Norwood location lists small furniture among its donation categories. That should not be read as confirmation that a large sofa, sectional, or bedroom set will be accepted.
Keep household goods complete and manageable
Group related pieces together, protect fragile edges, and label boxes with their actual contents. A box marked “complete dinnerware set” is more helpful than an unmarked assortment.
Do not use an accepted category as permission to add anything vaguely similar. Contact the location about unusual, oversized, incomplete, or potentially hazardous items before loading them.
Give electronics a separate check
Ask whether the program takes that device type and whether it must work. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to back up and remove personal information before transferring a phone, computer, or other data-bearing device.
The EPA provides separate electronics donation and recycling guidance. A device that is unsuitable for donation may need an appropriate electronics recycling route, not an ordinary mixed donation box.
Your next step, made simple
Before you add an item to your pickup
- Check stability, cleanliness, missing parts, and damage.
- Record dimensions and material for furniture.
- Match the exact item to a current recipient guideline.
- Handle personal data on electronics before handoff.
- Keep uncertain or declined items on a separate list.
