Donation basics

How donation pickup works, from your room to the next home

A simple plan for choosing items, checking acceptance, and arranging the right pickup.

3 min read · TurboDonate guide

A successful donation starts before anything goes into a truck. The goal is to match useful items with a place that can actually receive them, then plan how they will leave your home.

Treat the process as two separate questions: can this item be donated, and what will it take to collect it? An item can be useful but unsuitable for a particular recipient or difficult to move through your building.

1. Make one honest inventory

List each item, its quantity, approximate dimensions, and condition. Write “three-seat sofa with a torn arm,” not simply “furniture.” Test drawers and moving parts. Keep components, shelves, and hardware together.

Separate items you are keeping from items you want removed. Mark anything you are unsure about so it does not accidentally become part of the pickup.

2. Check the destination before the date

Receiving organizations have different needs and limits. A furniture bank, a ReStore, and a thrift store do not necessarily accept the same things. Condition, size, available space, and current demand can affect a decision.

Check the recipient’s current guidelines and follow its approval process where required. Do not assume that paying for transportation guarantees acceptance, or leave items outside a closed donation location.

3. Describe the actual pickup

Include stairs, elevators, parking restrictions, long carries, and any disassembly that may be needed. A dresser beside a driveway and the same dresser on a third floor are different jobs.

TurboDonate’s request form collects the details for a reviewed quote. A request is not a confirmed pickup or a promise that every item will be accepted. Wait for the confirmed scope and arrangements before relying on a date.

4. Make the handoff easy

Empty drawers, remove personal belongings, and keep a clear route to the exit. Do not move heavy furniture yourself just to stage it. Tell the pickup team what has changed since the quote, including any added items.

Ask the receiving organization about any donation acknowledgment it provides. Keep transportation paperwork separately. If an item is declined, agree on the next step instead of assuming disposal is included.
